To start, the burpee is a full-body, strength training exercise. Every repetition works your calves, quads, glutes, hamstrings, abs, chest and arms. They are also great for working your endurance and cardiovascular conditioning. Another reason that you might want to reconsider burpees is that they are great for weight loss and fat burning.

I have always performed and coached the burpee as 1) get chest and thighs on the ground 2) get back up to your feet 3) get some daylight under your feet. Furthermore, I prefer touching my fingers to a target in the burpee to ensure a reach to the sky during the jump.

Note: Standard CrossFit burpees involve a clap at the top of each rep. The burpees in 16.1, however, are bar-facing, which means they require you to jump over your barbell—no clap necessary.
