There are actually five components used to measure fitness levels: aerobic or cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Cardio endurance refers to your body’s ability to withstand an extended period of elevated heart rate brought on by vigorous activity.

Level I – Healthy beginner. This level is the basic standard for health and fitness. Lacking these basic levels of strength, flexibility, and work capacity may limit you in life activities. Although this Level is challenging, the complete Level I should be attainable within 3 to 12 months for those with no significant limitations. At this level, proper basic movements, such as hip flexion and active shoulder use are developed, while healed injuries and structural problems are resolved. Mastery of all Level 1 movements must be achieved before moving to Level 2.

It builds on the foundational knowledge from level 2 so a certain amount of anatomy, physiology, and fitness knowledge is a prerequisite. This level is the equivalent of A-levels or NVQ level 3.
