The Open is the first qualifying stage of the CrossFit Games. Any athlete who wants to compete at the Games must first make it through the Open in their region. While the purpose of the Open is to find the fittest athletes in each region to move on to the regionals, it’s also an opportunity for any athlete at any level to participate in the competition.

In the Open, athletes are ranked on the leaderboard based on their performance relative to other athletes in their division, and are assigned a point value based on their placing in each event (e.g. 1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points).

The Open operates on a point-per-place scoring system. Your point total equals the sum of your ranks on each of the workouts. For example, Jamie Greene took third on Workout 16.1, 11th on Workout 16.2, and third on Workout 16.3, so her point total is determined by the equation 3 + 11 + 3 = 17 points.

The CrossFit workout template suggests you work out 5 times per week using a schedule of working out 3 days and then taking 1 day off.
