Change is a weird thing. We dream of living in new places, starting new habits or dropping old ones. Starting anything is hard. But a lot of what makes it hard is getting comfortable with change. As someone who goes to a CrossFit gym now, I am constantly hearing the question “can you start CrossFit out of shape?”. The answer is ABSOLUTELY. Did you read that right?

You can start CrossFit regardless of your shape. It might be a bit hard in the beginning, but all the exercises will be modified, and you will quickly get in better shape. If you are overweight or out of shape, CrossFit is a good way to start your fitness journey.

If you are overweight or out of shape, CrossFit is a good way to start your fitness journey. It is absolutely normal for a person who is out of shape to join CrossFit. Your coach will scale the workouts to your abilities, and the group will support you, regardless of your fitness level.

You will find out how truly out of shape you are. It is likely that your first few sessions at a CrossFit gym will consist of stretching and basic instruction. You will likely sweat like a pig and require numerous breaks to catch your breath even during this relatively easy phase.

I was very out of shape when I started. I only dabbled in bikram and trendy spin studios and toning workouts; never ran, rowed or lifted anything more than 5lb dumbbells. I also probably hit happy hour too many times a week. CrossFit was humbling and I was usually the last to finish or got time capped. I'm so glad I stuck with it.

CrossFit can absolutely help you get in great shape , and depending on the coach you work with, it’s not as dangerous as some people would have you believe. That said, CrossFit is not the best way to gain muscle and strength and lose fat, which is why many people get into it in the first place.

Starting CrossFit Out Of Shape Everyone’s fitness journey is going to look different – that’s one of the beauties of CrossFit. You could see a pro athlete walk into the gym – or someone who has never lifted a barbell in their entire life – and they’re both going to get their asses kicked – just the right amount.

When you do your first pull-up or rope climb, the feeling you have is like no other. But that also goes for saying when you drop the bar for the first time because it is too heavy and you can’t get out of a squat, you will be beyond frustrated with yourself. CrossFit really pushes your mental strengths and weaknesses.
